It's undoubtedly a wobbly film that often loses balance, but thanks to some sharp filmmaking and a firecracker of a lead performance, Christy survives just long enough to go the distance.

At nearly two-and-a-half hours, it may test the patience, but the cast give the story just enough grit to pull this off

There was a story to be told in Martin’s life about how even the strong can be devastated by domestic violence, or how the fight to live authentically can be a lifelong struggle. Sadly, Christy just isn’t the film to tell that tale.

Sweeney has already shown what a superb and detailed performer she is in the FBI interrogation movie Reality, but this is far inferior: a stodgy, lifeless piece of work.

All in all, Christy is a good movie as opposed to a great one, even though it’s anchored by a terrific lead performance.

The film doesn’t quite find the right balance between celebrating its subject’s achievements and confronting her trauma. It leans too hard on the latter, turning what could have been an inspiring sports biopic into an overly grim cautionary tale.

Celebrating the triumphs of a brave female athlete, and boasting a strong central performance from a transformed Sydney Sweeney, Christy is a well-meaning but meandering feminist parable.

Sweeney gives a movie-star performance in Christy, both doing what the role calls for, and looking recognizably like the star we know from other media.

The film’s real power lies in the story of Martin’s tragic relationship with her violent, insecure husband/manager, James, played with slow-burn explosive energy by Ben Foster

How can someone take a story like this and put it into a PowerPoint template? It’s that formulaic.

Whether it's in the ring in a male-dominated sport or facing up against domestic abuse, Martin is a remarkable figure, given her due by Sweeney, who pours her heart into this transformation.

Put into the same boxing ring to duke it out, the movie’s unintentional silliness easily KO’s its blips of emotional gravity. But it’s not just that the script is formulaic but that its star doesn’t carry the same conviction as the film’s subject.

Together, Sweeney and Foster deliver performances of a lifetime and are among the top onscreen acting duos of the year as they bring skill and raw emotion to their roles. Simply put, Christy is an inspirational masterclass in onscreen performance.

Sydney Sweeney turns in her most impassioned performance to date as boxer Christy Martin, and although the film smartly depicts the devastating effects of living the closet, it is an otherwise standard biopic which could have benefitted from...

If you are interested in learning more about the signs of abuse before they reach the point of no return, then this movie is for you, but if you are looking for a movie that conveys the excitement of the ring, keep it moving.

Sydney Sweeney is doing the best work of her career, and Ben Foster reminds audiences he still deserves to be qualified as an Oscar nominee.

Nothing Christy does is an outright failure, but there’s a much better film to be made from everything Christy Martin’s life brings to the table.
