In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television--a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards (Glen Powell) is convinced by the show's charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben's defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite--and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Spiritedly sprinting through grim source material, Edgar Wright's The Running Man doesn't live up to the director's high bar for inventive action extravaganzas but maintains a slick stride.

Audience Says

Though a bit of the source material’s thematic heft is softened here, The Running Man still delivers a high-octane, gripping ride supercharged by Glen Powell’s irresistible charisma.

Adam Kempenaar Filmspotting Wright juggles dystopian thrills, satire, sentiment, and slapstick, but never nails any of them. The result is a genre mashup that feels more muddled than masterful. Rated: 2.5/5 Nov 21, 2025 Full Review Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com I say change the channel and go watch something else. Rated: 1.5/4 Nov 21, 2025 Full Review Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (LAist) A $110 million mess... Between [the original and the remake], all you had to was just make one good movie, and they missed. Nov 19, 2025 Full Review Mark Meszoros The News-Herald (Willoughby, OH) Watching it left us increasingly worn out by its excesses. Not counting the credits, the movie is just over two hours long, but it feels longer — even as its relentless pace ensures it never drags. Rated: 2/4 Nov 27, 2025 Full Review John McDonald johnmcdonald.net.au For us the major interest is how this chase will end, which renders two hours of furious action merely academic. Wright is obviously hoping we’ll be so engrossed in following Ben’s next move that we’ll live imaginatively within the film moment by moment. Nov 27, 2025 Full Review Kiko Martinez The Cinesnob Podcast There’s spectacle here, but not in a good way. Edgar Wright’s creativity should've injected humor, but it’s missing throughout. Tony Very accurate to the original story up until the last five minutes. Great movie. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/30/25 Full Review Reimah R What a letdown from the previews! Such a negative based preface it ruined my experience. I would have walked out of if I hadn’t gone with friends! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/30/25 Full Review JJJ Faithful translation of the book (besides the ending) which they can't really do post 9/11. The flash forward/flashback set-up at the end was somewhat confusing (took a second to see what they were doing), but otherwise a solid flick. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/30/25 Full Review Johanna Different from the original, but just as good. Brings new depth to the story. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/30/25 Full Review Linwood R Great action, great acting. Good movie to get lost in!
